Sharjah: An eight-year-old Indian girl died after she was run over by a speeding car while crossing a road in Al Istqlal area in Sharjah on Friday, an official told Gulf News.

Police patrol and paramedics arrived at the scene after they were alerted around 9pm. The child was with her family when the accident occurred between the immigration and Al Istqlal Square traffic signal, the official said.

The girl and her family were crossing the road from an undesignated area even though a pedestrian crossing was nearby.

Police said the driver who caused the accident was speeding.

“The driver is in custody and is being questioned at Al Gharb police station,” the official said.

Sharjah Police appealed to all parents to observe road safety rules and asked drivers to give priority to people crossing roads.

Meanwhile, An Indian man was hit by a speeding vehicle on Friday evening, police said on Saturday.

The accident took place under a bridge on Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road towards Interchange Number 4 in the Industrial Area. The victim suddenly tried to cross the road when he was hit by speeding vehicle and trapped under it, the police said.

He was admitted to Al Qassimi Hospital’s intensive care unit where his condition is said to be critical. The driver who caused the accident is in police custody.
