Dubai: As many as 1,346 traffic accidents were reported in Dubai during the Eid Al Fitr holidays, police said on Wednesday.

Major Ahmad Abdul Rahman Akeel, deputy director of the Command and Control Centre in Dubai Police, revealed that the centre received 15,263 phone calls during the Eid holidays and reported 1,346 accidents.

The accidents were mostly caused by speeding, lane indiscipline, not leaving sufficient distance between vehicles and not paying attention while driving.

Police urged all motorists to refrain from careless driving and to take special care when driving near residential areas, pedestrian crossings and intersections.

“Raising awareness about correct driving methods through campaigns, workshops and initiatives is among Dubai Police’s strategic objectives,” Major Akeel said.

He called on motorists and other residents to call the toll-free number 999 only in times of emergency and to call 901 for enquiries regarding services provided by Dubai Police. Receiving non-urgent phone calls on 999 might adversely impact the response time and prevent genuine callers from reporting emergency cases, Maj Akeel said.

He added that the operations room receives a large number of emergency-related phone calls on a daily basis that need to be answered in the fastest time possible. People can get information regarding police services like criminal and traffic-related enquiries, obtaining a good conduct certificate, obtaining a burial permit and subscribing to the home security programme by calling 901.
