Dubai: UAE volunteers from a Dubai-based charity have helped build a primary school in Senegal, an impoverished east African country.
The school, in a village in the country’s western region, will accommodate 150 children and two teachers, according to Dubai Cares, the charity sponsor. Dubai Cares is part of the Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives.
It will also help educate 50 illiterate men and women in the village.
For the 14 volunteers from the UAE who took part, the school work-site activities included digging trenches, laying bricks, tying and reinforcing steel bars as well as mixing concrete, picking, sifting and pumping water.
The volunteer group was also supported by a construction team from the local community.
“The impact of this initiative would be monumental on the local community in Senegal as together with the team we are contributing to providing them the gift of education,” said Ruby Ann Frani, one of the volunteers from the UAE.
“The UAE is keen to always be present to support such great initiatives in different parts of the world,” said Mohammad Salem Al Rashid, the UAE’s ambassador to Senegal.
“The UAE embassy would also like to thank all the volunteers who travelled from the UAE and devoted their time and energy in support of this noble humanitarian mission.”
