Manama: A Tunisian man has been arrested after he scrawled the Star of David on the wall of a mosque in the capital on Friday.

Witnesses said that the man, reportedly in his 50s, spray painted the “Israeli star” as thousands of worshippers were leaving Al Fateh Mosque in downtown Tunis following the Friday prayers.

He then attempted to hide within a group of worshippers, but was spotted by young people who searched his bag.

However, the man refused to explain his act and kept mumbling that the end of the world was near, local Arabic daily Assabah reported on Saturday.

He was later taken away by the police despite the insistence of some worshippers to interrogate him at the mosque.

Tunisia, the first Arab country to topple its political regime in January 2011, has been hit by an unexpected political and ideological turmoil after moderate Islamists won the parliamentary elections.

Salafists, a new radical force emerging in the country, and liberals, who believe they should have been given a greater representation in the constitutional assembly and a more important role in political life, have been recalcitrant in extending cooperation to the government.
