Manama: An appeal by a Kuwaiti lawmaker to look into the possibility of killing the Syrian ambassador to Kuwait has sparked angry reactions and calls to put him on trial.

Addressing a gathering in Kuwait City held to express support to the Syrian people, MP Mohammad Hayef said that the Syrian ambassador was "a member of the gang ruling in Damascus" and urged Muslim scholars to issue a fatwa (religious edict) to kill him and all other Syrian ambassadors throughout the world. However, even though supporters rallied to his call on their Twitter accounts, one of his closest partners, MP Waleed Al Tabtabai quickly distanced himself.

"I was surprised by the statement and I wish he had never made it," Al Tabtabai said, quoted by Al Kuwaitiya daily. "I know that he had good intentions, but I am afraid his statement could be exploited against him. We are against calls to kill anyone," he said. MP Hussain Al Qallaf said that the government needed to act towards Hayef's statement.
