Manama: Syria's Grand Mufti Ahmad Hassoun said that he had information about a plot to divide Egypt.

"There are concerns about schemes for Egypt," the mufti said. "I have information about a plan similar to the Israeli plot that succeeded in dividing Sudan into two countries," he told Al Rai daily in Wednesday.

However, the mufti did not give any details about the alleged plot.

He, however, said that he had been offered money by the opposition to resign from his post.

"I told them to give me their reform programme so that I could present it to President Bashar Al Assad, and if he does not implement it, I will say that the president has not implemented it. Until now, nobody has given me anything," he said, quoted by the daily.

However, the mufti came under heavy criticism from Al Rai readers who posted harsh comments over his perceived defense of the Syrian regime.
