Manama: The international community should move promptly into action to protect civilians in Syria and hold those guilty of serious human rights violations accountable, Qatar has said. “The international community has failed to fulfill its duties and responsibilities in providing protection to the Syrian people while the acts of barbarism and brutality committed by the Syrian regime continue,” Shaikha Alia Ahmad Bin Saif Al Thani,
Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, said.
“The international community also failed to deal seriously and decisively with the serious deterioration of the humanitarian situation and to stop the massacres and war crimes committed by the regime in Syria,” she told the 23rd session of the Human Rights Council “Annual Report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights - the Interactive Dialogue.”
The Qatari diplomat said that Doha “condemned the killing and military operations carried out by Syrian government forces and their militias as well as external parties loyal to the Syrian regime against the city of Al Qusayr whose population is suffering from an unjust siege and heavy shelling.” Shaikha Ali added that the Syrians were “undergoing a real genocide at the hands of the regime whose heinous crimes are increasing day after day,”
Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported. There are grave concerns that more massacres might occur if such military operations continued, she reportedly said. In her speech,
Shaikha Alia called upon the international community “to show more firmness toward the gross and systematic violations carried out by the Israeli occupation authorities in the Palestinian territories and the occupied Arab territories, particularly with regard to the illegal settlement expansion and provocative policies and practices carried out in the city of Jerusalem.”
The diplomat also condemned “acts of repression and brutal massacres committed against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar,” and stressed that “it is not possible for the international community to remain silent and watch the ethnic cleansing and violations of Muslims’ rights there and forcing them to leave their areas and homes,” the official news agency reported. “She also called on the authorities in Myanmar to ensure the protection of and respect for all Rohingya Muslims and their right to full citizenship and to humanitarian aid.”
