Damascus: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas arrived in Syria on Sunday and went straight to Syrian President Bashar Assad's presidential palace for talks.
Abbas' aide says his meetings with the Syrian president have focused on Middle East peace talks and efforts to reconcile rival factions.
However, Nabil Abu Rdeneh would not say whether Abbas would meet with the exiled leader of Hamas during his visit to Syria. Hamas is the main rival to Abbas' Fatah party.
The deep rift between Hamas and Fatah goes back to June 2007 when fighters loyal to Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip.
Syria backs Hamas but has promised to help push for dialogue between the two sides.
