Manama: No Arab country has accepted the conditions set by Syria to allow observers into the country, the head of the Arab League has said.
"The Arab foreign ministers will meet within days to review Syria's conditional response to signing the protocol to send observers into the country," Nabeel Al Araby told Kuwaiti daily Al Anba on Monday.
Egypt's Mena news agency said that the meeting would be held on Saturday. A first meeting by a small group of ministers at 10 am will discuss the Syrian response and will submit its recommendations to the broader meeting of ministers at 1 pm on the same day, the news agency said.
Al Araby said that Iraq, which announced a mediation initiative between the Arab league and Syria, did not solve the crisis.
"I cannot say that a country will solve the Syrian crisis," the Arab League chief said, adding that several heads of state and government have been contacting Damascus to reach solutions.
"I tell the Syrians that your letter includes new conditions and it will have to be shown to the ministerial council. I do urge and invite [Syrian Foreign Minister Walid] Al Muallam to sign the protocol because he had sent two responses. In one, there was delegation to the deputy minister to sign and in the other, a statement that they are ready to sign, but with new conditions," he said.
The Arab League chief said that 21 Arab countries were keen on an Arab solution to the crisis.
"Should Syria sign the protocol, there will be observers from all Arab countries to observe the situation and guarantee protection for the people," he said.
Syria, suspended from the Arab League, is facing sanctions from Arab countries in response to its reported use of violence against demonstrators.
