Dubai: Arab League monitors met in Cairo yesterday to discuss Syria's failure in bring an end to its crackdown on peaceful protests, Al Jazeera reported.

An initial report which was to be discussed during the meeting says that violence by Syrian forces continues and the military has failed to withdraw from the cities.

The meeting, chaired by Qatari Prime Minister Shaikh Hamad Bin Jasem Al Thani, will discuss the monitors' first report which will contain "pictures, maps and information of the events witnessed by the monitors on the ground," League Assistant Secretary General Ahmad Bin Hilli said.

According to an Arab League source, the report says that the monitors were "subjected to harassment by the Syrian government and by the opposition." It also recommends that the mission continue its work and that monitors be equipped with more technological assistance, the source told reporters.

Meanwhile, in a show of solidarity with Syria, a large Russian naval flotilla led by an aircraft carrier docked in the Syrian port of Tartus. The six-day call at the Mediterranean port where Russia has a recently expanded naval base is intended to lend support to the Al Assad regime.
