Dubai: The admission by the Arab League of "mistakes" in its observer mission could be the first move towards internationalising the Syrian uprising, according to analysts who spoke to Gulf News.

On Wednesday, Qatari Prime Minister Shaikh Hamad Bin Jasem Al Thani, who heads an Arab League task force in Syria, discussed the deadly crackdown on protests with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in New York.

"We are coming here for technical help and to learn from the experience the UN has, because this is the first time the Arab League is involved in sending monitors, and there are some mistakes," said Shaikh Hamad, quoted by Kuna.

"It is about time for the Arabs to seek UN aid to stop the violence in Syria after the Russian veto and "the failure" of the Arab efforts to stop violence and protect civilians," said Salman Shaikh, director of the Brookings Doha Centre.

If the Syrian issue goes to the UN, there will be a series of measures to deal with the situation, the last of which could be military intervention, according to Nabeel Abdul Fatah, an Egyptian international law expert.
