At his first news conference of the year, the UN chief said: "The calamity in Syria is without doubt our main immediate test."
Ban on Tuesday said he conferred Monday with special envoy Lakhdar Brahimi and that "our shared assessment is that we are still a long way from getting the Syrians together."
The secretary-general said the humanitarian situation in Syria is worsening, with millions struggling to survive in a harsh winter with little food and shelter.
Ban says more than 650,000 people have fled the country.
