UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expects Sudan to ensure the safety of UN staff there despite charges against the country's president, the United Nations said on Monday.
United Nations: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expects Sudan to ensure the safety of UN staff there despite charges against the country's president, the United Nations said on Monday.
The International Criminal Court prosecutor has filed charges against Sudan's President Omar Hassan Al Bashir for allegedly masterminding a genocide campaign in Darfur.
ICC prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo also charged Bashir with the death of 35,000 people and using rape as a weapon of war. He asked for an arrest warrant for Bashir.
In a statement, Ban "expects that the Government of Sudan will continue to cooperate fully with the United Nations in Sudan, while fulfilling its obligation to ensure the safety and security of all United Nations personnel and property."
He said UN peacekeeping missions in Sudan would continue to work "in an impartial manner, cooperating in good faith with all partners so as to further the goal of peace and stability in the country."
