Ramallah: The Israeli police have deployed more troops across the entire city and installed road checkpoints preventing the Palestinian residents of Silwan and other Arab neighbourhoods from moving freely, following clashes which erupted in several neighbourhoods after the death of Samer Sarhan.

The police have spread all over Occupied Jerusalem, with numerous road checkpoints set up, cutting off many of the Arab neighbourhoods.

"Tense calm has been restored in the city after the burial of Sarhan, but the situation could explode at any moment because of the [provocation] of the colonists, who are [increasing the tension]," said Abdullah Siyam, the Vice Chairman of the Jerusalem Governorate.

He added that, following the clashes, there have been 10 Palestinians injured and many others jailed. "Those who were injured by guards at the time of the shooting of Sarhan are still in critical conditions," he said.

"The current situation in the Arab neighbourhoods in Jerusalem is just like a time bomb that can explode any moment," he added. "During the funeral of Sarhan, the Israeli police shot tear gas at those who participated in the burial, while several young men found refuge at the courts of Al Aqsa Mosque compound, that is the next door to Al Rahma Cemetery where Sarhan was buried."

The Israeli police, he claims, raided the mosque and arrested many people at check points in the aftermath.

"The issue of suing the Israeli government for the death of Sarhan is left for his family, which is free to take the necessary legal measures and file a case against the Israeli guard who shot Sarhan dead for no reason," he said.
