Occupied Jerusalem: An Israeli regime paratrooper wounded in fighting in the Gaza Strip during Israel’s 50-day war there died in hospital on Sunday, the army said.

“Sergeant Shachar Shalev... who was critically injured during combat in the Gaza Strip on July 23, died of his wounds,” a statement said.

His death brought to 66 the number of soldiers killed during the seven-week war on Gaza.

The conflict also killed six civilians on the Israeli side, including a Thai worker and a four-year-old boy.

More than 2,100 Palestinians were killed in Israel’s bombardment of the narrow coastal territory, nearly 70 per cent of them civilians, according to the United Nations.

The war began on July 8 and ended with a ceasefire on Tuesday.
