Gaza City: A young Palestinian man was lightly wounded by Israeli army gunfire in southern Gaza on Friday, Palestinian security sources said.

They said the man, 22, was hit when soldiers fired shots in the air and then at a group of around 20 Palestinians near the security fence between Israel and Gaza in the Khan Younis area.

An army spokeswoman, contacted by AFP, said: “We don’t have any information on such an incident.”

Israel and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas which rules the Gaza Strip fought an eight-day war last month in which 174 Palestinians and six Israelis were killed, before an Egyptian-mediated ceasefire on November 21.
