Israeli Defence Minister: Hezbollah attempts to kidnap Israelis thwarted
Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak says several attempts by Lebanon's Hezbollah group to kidnap Israelis abroad have been thwarted.
Occupied Jerusalem: Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak says several attempts by Lebanon's Hezbollah group to kidnap Israelis abroad have been thwarted.
Reports in Israeli media on Tuesday said Israel's intelligence service prevented Hezbollah agents from kidnapping as many as five Israelis in foreign locations.
"There have been quite a few intelligence alerts in recent weeks and there were a number of very important thwarting operations," Barak said in a briefing to reporters, according to a transcript released by his office on Wednesday.
Last month, Israeli intelligence sounded warnings about a west African country that houses a small group of Israelis, and a large Lebanese expatriate community, an Israeli security source said.
Israel's National Security Council also issued an advisory urging Israelis abroad to beware of kidnapping attempts.
