Syria-based Hamas leader, Khaled Mashaal, is a target for assassination after ordering Sunday's attacks, said an Israeli Cabinet minister on Wednesday.

The attack on an Israeli army base killed two soldiers and included the controversial kidnapping of 19-year-old Cpl. Gilad Shalit.

Justice Minister Haim Ramon told Army Radio, "He is definitely in our sights ... he is a target."

"Khaled Mashaal, as some who is overseeing, actually commanding the terror acts, is definitely a target," he added.

Mashaal has already survived a previous assassination attempt by Israel, when two Mossad agents where caught trying to poison him.

King Hussein of Jordan forced Israel to give the anecdote to the dying Mashaal in exchange for the captured agents.

Ramon has also called on the international community to force Syrian President Bashar Assad to expel Mashaal from Damascus.
