Ramallah Khader Adnan who fasted 66 days in protest against Israel's administrative detention orders said Wednesday that he would go on an open-ended hunger strike in case the Israelis detain him again.
Speaking to Gulf News after his release from Al Ramallah hospital, Adnan said: "The Israelis have tried me once and they can try me again if they decide to detain me one more time".
"There have been no guarantees that the Israelis will stop arresting me. The Israelis are known historically and religiously for breaking their promises and conventions, but I have a sharp weapon which proved to be extremely effective," he said. "The only guarantee is the love and support of the Palestinian, Arab and Muslim supporters from around the world," he added.
Adnan said that his strategic move to go on a hunger strike has been taken up by fellow Palestinian prisoners. "I had a solid belief that my fast will come on high grounds, and other Palestinian prisoners will take advantage of it," he said.
‘Full of misery'
Adnan said the West Bank is full of misery because of the Israelis' desire to flex their muscles on the unarmed and innocent Palestinian public.
"The hunger strike is not difficult and can meet all the demands of prisoners," he said, adding that Palestinian prisoners can accomplish many things with their fast. "Over history, the hunger strike has proved to be a very effective weapon," he said, citing how he managed to walk free after fasting for 66 days in a row.
Warning to Israelis
Adnan advised Israelis to meet the demands of Palestinian prisoners during the initial days of their fast. "I honestly advise the Israelis to meet all demands of fasting prisoners during the first days of their fast before it is too late," he said.
"The current hunger strike is successful especially after the fasting prisoners put their hands on the Holy Quran and swore they will continue it till all their demands are fully met," he said.
Speaking about his days behind bars, Khader said that he had been subjected to severe humiliation. "The Israeli investigators came up with pictures of my wife, mother and other female relatives and insulted them using the worst words," he said. "The investigators recommended that I undergo DNA tests for my two daughters," he said, adding that he had not spoken to his family since day one of detention.
He said he was subject to naked searches whenever he was moved from one room to another, adding that the quality of food served to prisoners under administrative detention was poor.
Adnan said the Israeli investigators threatened to detain several of his relatives and friends as well.
