Occupied Jerusalem: The European Parliament president has condemned the arrest of Palestinian parliamentary speaker Abdul-Aziz Duaik by Israel.
Josep Borrell said: "The arrest of President Duaik is totally unacceptable. On behalf of the European Parliament, I demand that the Israeli authorities release him immediately."
The speaker for the Palestinian parliament was arrested by Israeli forces early on Sunday morning.
Palestinian parliament officials say that around twenty Israeli army vehicles surrounded Hamas member, Abdul-Aziz Duaik's house and soldiers then arrested him.
The Israeli military confirmed the arrest but would not give a reason for it.
Israeli forces have surrounded Duaik's house twice before but failed to arrest him.
The parliament speakers arrest has been condemned by Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat who demanded his release along with all the other government officials currently being held.
Israel arrested dozens of Hamas officials on 29 June as part of it's assault on Palestine after a 25 June cross border raid resulted in the killing of two Israeli soldiers and the capture of another.
