Ramallah: A Palestinian woman was arrested with her two babies while visiting her jailed husband in the Eshel Prison. Israeli guards accused 30-year-old Nihal Ghannam of attempting to smuggle a mobile phone to her husband Mu’amar Ghawadrah.

The family of Nihal are unaware about her whereabouts or the whereabouts of her two-year-old and nine-month old children. Nihal was only able to make one phone call to her mother-in-law to inform her that she has been arrested.

A senior member of the Palestinian Prisoner’s Club said that it was highly unlikely that Nihal attempted to smuggle anything to her husband, as Israeli authorities conduct intense and intrusive inspections before allowing visits.

If caught, families are often slapped with several years of bans on visits, so its a risk not many would take.

Mu’ammar was one of more than 1,000 Palestinian inmates released from Israeli prisoners in exchange for the Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, but was rearrested a year ago.

He had been serving a lifetime sentence. Nihal was seeing her husband for the first time after she was banned for several months, but she was arrested before she could see him.

There were no updates on the whereabouts of Nihal as Gulf News went to print.
