Tripoli: At least five people were killed and 50 wounded in Tripoli Friday after a peaceful demonstration calling on militia to leave the capital turned violent, the health ministry said.

“The toll has widened to five dead and 50 wounded,” the ministry’s spokesman said, updating an earlier figure but without being able to give a breakdown on casualties.

Initial casualties came when men inside the Misrata militia’s headquarters opened fire on the demonstrators. That sparked a violent response in which armed men stormed the collection of villas occupied by the militia and set them on fire.
