Dubai: Hundreds of unarmed Hezbollah supporters gathered Tuesday morning in central Beirut, especially in the areas of Bshara Khoury, Ras Al Nabeh, Tayounneh and Zoqaq Blat.
The gathering started at 7am, as reported by Al Arabiya correspondent in Lebanon. The peaceful protest was against the draft indictment issued by the prosecutor of the international Lebanon tribunal over the 2005 killing of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
The Prosecutor of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, Daniel Bellemare, has admitted the charge sheet in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Al Hariri late last night.
The contents of the charge sheet have not been disclosed yet, and been delivered to Judge Daniel Fransen.
The Special Tribunal for Lebanon’s Office issued a statement later on Monday that Bellemare’s draft submission “marks the beginning of the judicial phase of the tribunal’s work.”
“The prosecutor and his team will continue to vigorously pursue his mandate with respect to both continued investigative activity and the prosecution of this case.”
The statement added that Bellemare will issue a videotaped statement about the indictment’s filing on Tuesday.
The Special Tribunal for Lebanon chief of Public Affairs Crispin Thorold announced that the tribunal’s content will not be announced before Fransen approves the indictment, adding that the process could take from 6 to 10 weeks.
Hezbollah and its allies have for months been pressing Prime Minister Saad Hariri to disavow the STL on the grounds that it is part of a US-Israeli plot that will indict Hezbollah members.
