Abu Dhabi: The UAE has strongly condemned the car bomb attack in Beirut on Friday which killed former Lebanese finance minister Mohammad Chatah and five others, a WAM report said.

In a statement the Foreign Ministry said that the UAE strongly deplores the terrorist attack which targets the unity and stability of Lebanon and contradicts all human values.

The UAE called on Lebanese political leaders to stand firmly against those who target the security and stability of the country and protect it from the repercussions of this criminal act which aims to plunge Lebanon into chaos and violence

The UAE reiterated its unwavering stand against terrorism in all its shapes and forms and offered condolences to the families of the victims.

In Beirut, the top United Nations envoy in Lebanon condemned the car bombing.

Derek Plumbly, the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, was “shocked and deeply saddened” by the incident, according to a news release that extended condolences to Chattah’s family and colleagues, and to the families of all of the victims of the bombing.

Calling it an act of terrorism, Plumbly stressed the importance of bringing the culprits to justice, as well as the need for restraint and for all Lebanese to come together in support of institutions of the State and the security forces at a difficult time.

Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait have also condemned the attack, reports said.
