The Syrian government said the move was linked to a crackdown on smuggling activities and other crimes along the border.
A Lebanese army spokesman said that nearly 10,000 Syrian forces have been deployed in the Abbudiya region along the border.
Lebanese newspaper Al Mustaqbal reported that troops had begun deploying along the northern border at the weekend.
Anti-Syrian parties in Lebanon have accused Syria of plotting to return troops to Lebanon after Damascus was forced to withdraw its forces from the country in 2005.
