Beirut: An official close to Lebanon's top Shiite cleric says the influential leader has been hospitalised.

The official says Grand Ayatollah Mohammad Hussain Fadl Allah has been in hospital for 12 days but his conditions deteriorated on Friday after suffering complications from a liver problem. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

The 75-year-old Fadl Allah is a very influential Shiite cleric in the region, with followings in Lebanon and Iraq. Western media have called him the spiritual leader of Hezbollah - a claim both he and the group deny.

Fadl Allah, a harsh critic of US Mideast policies, is known to suffer from diabetes and high blood pressure.

He was born in Iraq and at the age of 30 moved to Lebanon.
