Lebanon's Sulaiman urges unity after peace deal

Beirut: Lebanon's army chief called for national unity after rival politicians agreed to end months of conflict in the country, a newspaper reported on Friday.

"I cannot save the country alone. This mission requires the efforts of all," General Michel Sulaiman told as-Safir newspaper.

Parliament is set to confirm Sulaiman as head of state on Sunday, filling a post left vacant since November.

"Security is not achieved with muscles, but joint political will," Sulaiman said. "We have to fortify ourselves politically and in terms of security through internal unity," he said.

The US-backed ruling coalition and the Hezbollah-led opposition held talks in Qatar this week to agree on Sulaiman's election and the formation of a new government.
