Dubai: Renowned journalist Robert Fisk postponed a visit to the UAE on Saturday because of the ongoing violence in Beirut.
The 61-year-old, who has spent 30 years living and reporting in the Middle East, was due to appear at Abu Dhabi Mall and Dubai's Mall of the Emirates to promote and discuss his new book The Age of the Warrior.
However, Fisk said it was impossible to get to the airport from his home in the Corniche Al Manara district of the Lebanese capital after Hezbollah fighters seized control of west Beirut on Friday.
Nusrat Ibrahim, Marketing and Retail Manager for Jashanmal Bookstores told Gulf News she was still hopeful of Fisk making a UAE appearance sometime next week.
She said, I was talking to Robert (Fisk) late on Friday night and at that stage we were still hopeful of him catching a flight to Dubai.
"But the main violence is taking place in west Beirut and Robert said there was a lot of shooting and fighting in the area. He also said there was a tense atmosphere in the air."
"He couldn't leave his house let alone reach the airport. He said the streets were deserted and the shooting had calmed down a little but it was still too dangerous for non-essential travel. As soon as the situation calms down we will try to bring him over to the UAE," she said.
