Beirut: A string of explosions shook the southern Lebanese region of Shehabiyeh on Friday, an army spokesman told AFP.

"A number of explosions have been heard on the outskirts of Shehabiyeh" near the southern coastal city of Tyre, the spokesman told AFP.

The nature and cause of the explosions were not yet clear, he said.

The explosions also caused a fire to break out in the area, a security source said.
