Dubai: In a letter to the Lebanese people late Wednesday, the mufti of the Lebanese Republic Shaikh Mohammad Rashid Qabbani said: "The serious security incidents, which erupted in Beirut today are a blatant assault on our country, as well as it being considered a flagrant aggression on the sovereignty of our nation and the dignity of the people of Beirut and other areas that have been assaulted by the invaders.
We believed that there was a union call for a strike, in order to ask for social and economic demands by workers. We were surprised that the matter turned into a revolt and an invasion of the streets of the capital Beirut by armed gangs ... We used to believe that Hezbollah is a resistance force against the Israeli occupation, but it turned out to be an armed force to occupy Beirut.
To that end, we from Dar Al Fatwa in the Lebanese Republic, call upon the Arab world and the Islamic world ... to stop these tragic violations and put an end to them.
Lebanon at this point, with its Muslim and Christian population is being subjected to an attempt of dominance by a political party, with external support and under the guise of being a resistance force.
The party have kidnapped the heart of the capital, Beirut, more than a year ago and turned it into a camp of armed men. And here it is again kidnapping the airport. Hezbollah is trying to force the Leb-anese government to stop its control of the airport and allow Hezbollah to build a communications network, surpassing the network of the official Lebanese state.
It is sad that there is an Islamic state funding these abuses that undermine the unity of the Lebanese Muslims.
We call upon our children and our brothers and our families especially in Beirut, and the whole of Lebanon to work on burying any form of sectarian sedition, and to uphold to their national unity."
