Jordanian editors on trial

Jordanian newspaper editors on trial for reprinting Danish cartoons

Last updated:

Amman: Two newspaper editors pleaded not guilty on Sunday to charges of "harming religious feelings" by reprinting caricatures of Prophet Mohammad.

The trial for Jihad Al Momani, chief editor of Shihan, and Hashim Al Khalidi, chief editor of al-Mihwar, was adjourned until Thursday.

Al Momani, who had been arrested Saturday, was released without bail. The government has threatened legal action against him.

He was fired on Thursday after publishing three of 12 Danish caricatures of Prophet Mohammad that have outraged Muslims.

Al Momani said he reprinted the cartoons to show readers "the extent of the Danish offense".

Al Khalidi, on the other hand, said he reprinted the caricatures on November 10 with an article criticizing the Danish newspaper.
