Jordan returns stolen antiquities to Iraq
Jordanian border officials on Sunday delivered more than 2,000 ancient artefacts looted from archaeological sites and Baghdad's museum in 2003.
Amman: Jordanian border officials on Sunday delivered more than 2,000 ancient artefacts looted from archaeological sites and Baghdad's museum in 2003.
Jordan's tourism minister Maha Al Khatib said the handover showed effective measures to prevent its borders being used by smugglers.
Amira Iidan said the archaeological items belonged to periods from 7,000 to 200 BC.
The most prized was an ivory relief stolen from the national museum that dates to the first millennium and came from the ancient Assyrian city of Nimrod.
At least 15,000 items had been stolen in looting in Iraq in 2003 and only 6,000 items had been returned. Iraq is now trying to reclaim the stolen artefacts.
