Parked car bomb kills 10 policemen in Iraq

Iraqi police say a parked car bomb targeting a passing police convoy in the disputed northern city of Kirkuk has killed 10 policemen and wounded at least 20 people.

Baghdad: Iraqi police say a parked car bomb targeting a passing police convoy in the disputed northern city of Kirkuk has killed 10 policemen and wounded at least 20 people.

Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Sarhat Qadir says all the killed were policemen working as security guards for the state-owned Gas Northern Company.

The spokesman says the bomb went off Wednesday afternoon on a street in a southern neighborhood of Kirkuk. The explosion occurred as the convoy belonging to the gas company was passing by.

He says that 12 policemen and eight civilians were among the wounded.

Kirkuk is a northern oil city where Arabs, Turkomen and Kurds are competing for power. It lies 180 miles, or 290 kilometers, north of Baghdad.
