Baghdad: The US military said on Sunday that a Shiite militiaman believed to have recently returned from Iran has been detained with four other suspects south of Baghdad.
A statement said one of those captured is believed to have "recently returned from Iran and is seeking to re-establish his power base" in the southern city of Qurna.
The statement added that the Shiite is being blamed for planting roadside bombs and other attacks on Iraqi and foreign forces.
The military says he was captured with another militant cell leader in the area, and three other suspects were seized in other operations.
