Baghdad: US and Iraqi officials say an Iraqi soldier has opened fire on American troops and killed two.
Nine US soldiers were wounded, a military statement said.
They were the first American servicemen killed since the US declared an official end to combat operations in the country last week.
The Americans were among a group of US soldiers meeting with Iraqi security forces at an Iraqi army compound near the city of Tuz Khormato, about 210 kilometres north of Baghdad. The assailant was shot and killed.
The Americans attacked on Tuesday were providing security for an American commander who was meeting with Iraqi forces at the compound. The city's police chief, Col. Hussain Rashid, identified the assailant as an Iraqi soldier and said the shooting happened after an argument. He did not provide further details.
