Iraqi Cabinet cancels meeting to discuss US-Iraq security pact
A government adviser says the Iraqi Cabinet has cancelled a meeting planned to discuss the US-Iraqi security pact that's under negotiation.
Baghdad: A government adviser says the Iraqi Cabinet has cancelled a meeting planned to discuss the US-Iraqi security pact that's under negotiation.
It's the latest setback to US hopes to reach agreement on a deal that would extend the presence of American forces beyond the end of this year.
Sadiq Al Rikabi says Sunday's extraordinary meeting was cancelled because proposals for amendments to an earlier draft were still coming in.
He says the Cabinet will hold its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday.
The draft has faced opposition from a number of critics who consider the deal an infringement on national sovereignty.
The pact would replace the UN mandate providing a legal basis for foreign forces in Iraq and expires December 31.
