Baghdad: Firebrand Shiite cleric Moqtada Al Sadr has called on the Iraqi government to re-instate over one thousand police officers and soldiers who were sacked for desertion during recent heavy clashes in Basra.
The sacked officers are believed to be loyal to Al Sadr, whose own militia men fought against them. Al Sadr said they were simply following orders from their religious leaders.
"I call upon all concerned authorities to reconsider their decision to dismiss those people from the army and the police. I demand they be reinstated and even rewarded for their loyalty and devotion to their religion," Al Sadr said in a statement.
