Baghdad: A roadside bomb killed five US soldiers on patrol in Baghdad, the US military said yesterday, bringing this month's death toll for US forces in Iraq to 100.
The deaths in an apparently coordinated ambush that included small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenade attacks underscore the cost to soldiers fighting a war that is increasingly unpopular in the United States. Seven other US soldiers were wounded, the military said.
One of the wounded soldiers has since returned to duty but six more were still receiving treatment.
The latest deaths take the number of US troops killed in Iraq to 100 so far this month, according to icasualties.org, a website that tracks military tolls. But an AFP count based on Pentagon figures put the toll at 82 for the month alone and to 3,559 since the March 2003 invasion.
Police Lieutenant Mohammad Hussaini said the bomb was placed under the pipeline in an area called Mowelha, near the town of Iskandiriyah.
The US military said Thursday's deadly ambush took place in southern Baghdad, an area known for roadside bomb strikes. "All of the wounded soldiers were evacuated to a combat support hospital following the attack. One soldier has returned to duty," a military statement said.
