Baghdad: The US military said in a statement on Saturday that it has released more than 10,000 detainees in Iraq this year.
The number of detainees released so far is more than the 8,900 released from detention last year.
At least 21,000 detainees are still being held in Iraq, the military added.
The United States wants to stop running prisons in Iraq and transfer detainees to Iraqi control, but this has been hampered by lack of adequate Iraqi jails.
