Tehran: Iran freed on Sunday a Syrian journalist working for Dubai television, Tehran's chief prosecutor was quoted as saying.

TV journalist Reza Al Basha  was detained during anti-government protests two weeks.

"This Syrian journalist was freed from jail this morning," Tehran General Prosecutor Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi told the semi-official Fars News Agency.

Ahmad Abdullah Al Shaikh, Managing Director of Dubai Media Incorporated, said Al Basha's release came after intensive contacts with Iranian authorities.

''The release of Al Basha, a 27 year-old Syrian journalist, came following a series of intensive contacts made over the past days with the Iranian authorities concerned, especially the Foreign Press Bureau at the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance,'' said Al Shaikh.

A European diplomat was also held for 24 hours. Iranian General Prosecutor Dolatabadi said on Sunday the diplomat was Swedish.

"This diplomat at the Swedish embassy in Tehran was arrested by security forces during the unrest on Ashura, but he was released after his identity was verified," Dolatabadi told Fars.

Eight people were killed in clashes between security forces and supporters of opposition leader Mir Hussain Mousavi on Ashura on December 27.

It was the worst violence since protests in the immediate aftermath of a disputed presidential election in June.

Opposition protesters say the vote was rigged in favour of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, which the government denies.
