Tehran: European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana began last-ditch talks with Iran on Friday to seek a solution to Tehran's nuclear crisis.

Solana is meeting Iran's nuclear envoy Saeed Jalili in London, just hours before reporting to major world powers the progress in talks over Iran's nuclear programme.

Iranian government spokesman Gholam Hossein Elham said that Jalili "will present new ideas and initiatives" during the meeting with Solana.

Iran has said it will not give up its nuclear rights. "Suspension is a step backward and is not on the agenda of the talks," the Iranian government spokesman has said.

Solana is expected to make his evaluation to the UN Security Council by Friday.

He has been pushing for broader negotiations to persuade Iran to stop its nuclear activities.

"What we are waiting for (from the talks) is, once again, to create the appropriate framework for the formal negotiations to begin," said his spokeswoman Cristina Gallach.

The United States and Western states have accused Iran of secretly making nuclear weapons, a charge that Iran denies.
