Dubai: Egypt's embattled president Hosni Mubarak is preparing to go to Germany to ensure a smooth exit as president of Egypt under the guise of a medical checkup, a German newsmagazine has reported.

According to German weekly Der Spiegel, the plans for Mubarak to stay at a luxury clinic in Germany are "more concrete" than previously reported, and are believed to be part of a deal that is being discussed between the US government and Mubarak's regime.

A number of hospitals are being considered, particularly the Max-Grundig-Klinik Bühlerhöhe in the southwestern town of Bühl near Baden-Baden, the magazine reports.

Mubarak's health is reported to be deteriorating. During the spring of 2010, Mubarak had his gallbladder and an intestinal polyp removed in the Heidelberg University Clinic.

In a similar situation, the Shah of Iran left Tehran to the US for medical treatment during what came to be known as the Islamic Revolution in 1979, and never returned.

Mubarak receives letter from Khalifa

Meanwhile,  Mubarak has received a letter from President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

This came as Mubarak received Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Foreign Minister, at the Presidential Palace in New Egypt, Cairo.
