Manama: The head of the Kuwaiti lawyers defending Egyptian former president Hosni Mubarak said that he had ample evidence that prove that the ousted leader is innocent.
Mubarak is charged with complicity in the killing of hundreds of protesters during an 18-day uprising that toppled his 29-year, authoritarian regime last February.
Mubarak and his two sons — wealthy businessman Alaa and his one-time heir apparent Jamal — also face corruption charges. Mubarak could face the death penalty if convicted.
"We will soon celebrate his acquittal," Faisal Al Utaibi said. "The January 25 revolution did not seek the downfall of Mubarak and his regime, but the disintegration of Egypt into three statelets. Mubarak was aware of the plot and preferred to step down to avoid bloodshed," he said in remarks published by Kuwaiti daily Al Rai on Wednesday.
Under the scheme, launched in 1985, Sinai and Taba would be a new state for the Palestinians, the north would be for the Christian Copts and the south for Muslims, the lawyer said.
Al Utaibi denied claims that he took up the case to gain fame.
"I am well known both in Kuwait and in the Gulf and I have never lost a case," he said.
Kuwait Bar Association has distanced itself from the Kuwaiti lawyers who flew to Egypt to defend Mubarak, saying that they did not represent it and that they were undermining relations with Cairo.
