Manama: A group of Egyptian religious scholars is ready to visit former president Hosni Mubarak to urge him to confess his crimes and repent, a local daily said.
"We are looking into requesting a visit to the former president and his sons to remind them of God, urge them to confess and to repent," Safwat Hijazi said. "The visit does not mean reconciliation or giving up on the blood of the martyrs, but rather as a reminder of God and the need to repent," he said, quoted by Egyptian newspaper Al Shorouq.
According to the daily, the religious scholars thought about making the visit after they saw that neither Hosni Mubarak nor his two sons showed any sign of remorse or guilt for what they had allegedly done to Egypt.
"We felt that the three of them were far away from God and could not appreciate the significance of guilt or remorse. Even though Ala'a and Jamal were holding a copy of the Quran, there was no obvious relation with God. We thought that we should push them to admit their crimes and confess before it is too late. Keeping away from God means that they will burn in hell," the scholar said. "There is a huge difference for Mubarak between dying as a man who had repented and asked for forgiveness and dying while being defiant and tenacious," he said.
However, Hijazi said that people who showed pro-Mubarak feelings when they saw him caged "did not see the blood of the martyrs and did not suffer during his reign."
"We are a highly emotional people and always willing to forgive. However, we must not give up rights, especially that some of the ex-leaders are still looking down on people," he said.
