Cairo: A brother of an army officer, who killed president Anwar Sadat in 1981, returned on Sunday to Cairo from Iran after an escape of more than two decades, according to security sources at the Cairo airport.
"Mohammad Al Islambouli was arrested upon his arrival aboard a plane coming from Dubai," said the sources. "He will be questioned by the military attorney-general soon in relevance to rulings passed against him by a military council," added the sources, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to talk to the media.
Al Islambouli fled Egypt in 1985 after brief detention due to what his relatives said constant security harassment. He moved across several countries including Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran where he stayed for eight years before being departed to Egypt.
In 1992, a military court sentenced him to death in absentia for alleged involvement in terror acts.
His younger brother Khaled was executed after found guilty of assassinating Sadat during a military parade in October 1981.
Mohammad's lawyer Nazar Gurab Sunday said he had asked Egypt's chief prosecutor to order Al Islambouli be taken to a military medical centre near Cairo where former president Hosni Mubarak is staying. "This will mean implementing the principle of equal treatment," said Gurab.
"Al Islambouli is in bad health. He previously had an open heart surgery and needs medical treatment," added the lawyer.
