Tunis: The mother of Mohammad Bu Azizi, the man whose self-immolation sparked uprisings in Tunisia and well beyond, on Sunday said that she looked forward to a compassionate constituent assembly.

"I cast my ballot for the sake of the nation and the freedom martyrs," Manoubia Bu Azizi said, in reference to the around 200 people who died during four weeks of protests that culminated with the downfall of the Zine Al Abidine Bin Ali regime.

"I will feel very pleased when all Tunisians are really happy after electing those who will fulfill their aspirations for a bright future for them and for the future generations. We all look forward to an assembly made up of compassionate people dedicated to serving the nation" she said in remarks carried by the Tunisian news agency.

Mohammad Bu Azizi set himself ablaze on December 17, 2010 in Sidi Bouzid in central Tunisia following an angry argument with a policewoman and a negative response from officials whose help he sought.

Bu Azizi died on January 4, ten days before Bin Ali was toppled.

His family now lives in Marsa, in the northern suburbs of the capital, Tunis.
