Ramallah: An Israeli colonist ran over a Palestinian child while he was playing in front of his house in the town of Yata, south of Hebron, and then fled the scene.

Sources in Hebron told Gulf News that Mahmoud Shehdah Al Amour, five, suffered serious injuries.

The sources added the boy was taken to Hebron public hospital where he was said to be in an unstable condition and almost clinically dead.

They said the Palestinian authorities have been working to arrange for the child’s transfer to an Israeli or Jordanian hospital, as the treatment needed may not be available in West Bank hospitals.

The Palestinian officials from the Palestinian-Israeli security liaison office have lodged a complaint about the colonist in question, and the Israelis have made a verbal promise to launch an investigation to find the driver.

The sources said dozens of similar violations by colonists have been reported in Hebron with at least ten hit-and-run cases reported since the beginning of the year.

Palestinians in Hebron have been subject to Israeli violence and harassment on a daily basis and have repeatedly complained about the 400 colonists living in the old town of Hebron (in the centre of the city). Hebron is surrounded by Israeli colonies and outposts.
