Occupied Jerusalem: Palestinian militants fired a rocket from the Gaza Strip into Israel on Friday without causing any casualties or damage.

The rocket apparently landed in an empty field and not one of the Israeli communities near the Gaza border, an army spokeswoman said.

Gaza militants have stepped up rocket fire in recent days, including one projectile that killed a Thai farm labourer.

The renewed fire comes after a year of quiet since Israel launched a devastating assault on the Hamas-run Gaza Strip in December 2008 aimed at halting rocket fire.

Some 1,400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis were killed in the 22-day war.

Israel routinely responds to rocket attacks with air strikes targeting smuggling tunnels on the Gaza-Egypt border and workshops Israel says are used to make rockets.
