Ramallah: A mistake by a doctor at one of the UN hospitals in the West Bank has cost six-year-old Hosn Mousa Assad her hearing, according to her father.

Mousa Assad said his daughter was left 90 per cent deaf as a result of the antibiotic prescribed by the doctor and he could not afford the medical treatment now needed.

"The least thing the UN can do is to provide the necessary treatment for the girl whose future remains unknown and insecure," he told Gulf News.

When Hosn was nine months old she was admitted to the hospital with a high fever.

The doctor prescribed a 12-day course of a strong antibiotic called vancomicine.

However, the girl immediately began to lose her hearing.

Discharged

Once discharged the parents realised the girl was almost completely deaf.

Assad took his daughter to Jordanian capital Amman to have her looked over at a hospital there.

Doctors credited her loss of hearing to the antibiotic prescribed to her at the UN hospital in the West Bank.

After lodging a formal complaint with the Palestinian authorities, the family discovered their case was one of several that have come about after doctors prescribed the antibiotic.

Hosn has received medical treatment in Italy through the help of non-governmental organisations, but her condition still requires a lot of work.

"I will never tire of chasing the rights of my little girl," a determined Assad said.
