Baghdad: A former Iraqi general during Saddam Hussain's regime was shot dead in central Baghdad on Friday, security sources said.

Abdelamir Hassan Abbas was shot dead as he was driving his car in the Zayouna neighbourhood, a security official said.
The official said that gunmen used silenced firearms to fire bullets into Abbas. “They killed him immediately,'' the official said. Iraqi military sources confirmed the incident.

Abbas started work as a defence ministry advisor several months ago.
